Donner GO Electric Guitar Amplifier

This device is as much a Bluetooth portable speaker as it is a ‘guitar amp’. The guitar sound is very decent, definitely tonally sufficient for practice. It will not be as loud as you’d expect from the advertised wattage compared to ‘real’ amps, I’m sure partially limited by the tiny size of the speakers. Even the 5 watt setting on my Marshall amp can get significantly louder than the Donner. But it is enough to play with others in a small room depending on the music genre.The port options are only Aux in, guitar in, and the charging port. it’s missing a way to connect it to external speakers like a real guitar amp. You probably wouldn’t get a spectacular sound with a 12” speaker not tuned for their amp modeling but I’d at least like the option.Build wise, it’s very compact, and I love the weightiness of it and the rubbery mottled texture feels genuinely premium. The single button does have its issues. On mine at least, the button doesn’t feel flimsy but it tilts a little back and fourth as it’s turned. The push to select style control is easy to learn and operate but also limiting. I could also see the rubber flap protecting the ports wearing off over time.You can play music through Bluetooth like a normal BT speaker which may be what I primarily end up using this for. Listening to some dance music, the bass is more than you’d expect from such tiny speakers - placing your hand on the Donner, you can feel how well it gives off deep bass for such a small profile. I imagine they did some resonance tricks to get particular bass frequencies to sound louder on such small speakers, as songs with a more rock-style low frequency profile do not punch as hard.You can also play a guitar through this, with the modeled amp sound, while playing music ‘clean’ via Bluetooth at the same time. I’ve used this to test guitar parts on some demos with bass and drums on them, and I like that it’s easy to control the volume of the guitar and backing separately to hear how everything will sound together. This is probably the most novel feature, giving it a lot of functionality as a practice tool.The App has limited options (including limited to horizontal display mode on iOS). It’s quite intuitive in terms of selecting amp models and dragging on effects, but the amp models are basically ‘clean’, ‘drive’, ‘distorted’, etc, plus some pedals to add in. Hopefully they will add more, as endless options can be the advantage of digital modeling. Unfortunately the App doesn’t have a way to adjust the audio played through Bluetooth either. It’d be nice to have some EQ settings for that.Overall, it’s not perfect, but if you want a decent portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a practice tool, the value is there.
