If you connect it to a computer, of course there are dedicated applications that allow you to enjoy various things, but you can also easily enjoy it by connecting it to your speakers. If your speakers have a microphone input terminal, you can connect it. It is easy to operate and even an amateur can handle it by reading the manual. It is very enjoyable.

This D1 is the revamped and upgraded replacement for Donner’s B1. It is smaller than the B1 width wise and is more intuitive. The enclosed instruction booklet will quickly be redundant-but if you happen to want a more comprehensive detailed book of words the full instructions can be downloaded from Donner. This new model is reasonably easy to use, it has a lot of hands on controls and a few fun features thrown in. I’m a beginner in the world of beat machines, sequencer etc. I didn’t want a machine that was overly simple or one that was so complicated that I would be overwhelmed. The K.O. 2 seemed fiddly and not well laid out. The Circuit Rhythm model was the closest competitor, but lacked an LCD screen and the buttons were all lumped together; four more and it could be used as a chess board. In the end this Donner was an easy winner. It looks as user friendly as it is. Buttons spaced, and their lighting coordinated with that of the faders to make life easier. The Donner also has an LCD screen, small, yes-but so useful until second nature takes over. One small issue with the screen, it only shows the first nine letters of folder titles so it might be difficult to find the one you’re looking for. Another small issue is the wording denoting each buttons’ purpose. It’s quite small and in dim surroundings might be difficult to see. Not an issue once the position of all the buttons have been memorised. I thought they might look good backlit, but changed my mind when I realised the machine would look more like a Christmas decoration. Samples have to be downloaded from the Donner Control App, (which has now been renamed Donner Connect) as the D1 isn’t a sampler. The downloads are mono. For the price that is only to be expected. The output sound is impressive and the 4GB internal storage is a pleasant addition. The touch pads are sensitive and include velocity sensors so they respond quickly and accurately when more volume is required. When I first placed the unit on a flat surface it wobbled, not much but enough to be annoying after not so long. Putting my hand on either end of the unit and twisting (a little) soon put that right. I feel that I’m at the beginning of a journey of not the world of beat machines. I’ve just about mastered the basics but realise I have a long way to go to understand all of this D1’s full capabilities. A journey I’m looking forward to-with a lot of adventures on the way! I love it.

The product itself is compact, but it can do what it can do. The product itself is compact, yet it can do a lot, and even beginners can use it without much hesitation because it consists of the minimum number of necessary buttons. The customizability of the PC connection is solid, and it can be used for DTM or as a performance machine without stress in various situations.

There is a definite learning curve if you never dealt with these type of devices. I have Dj'd for over 30 yrs, so I have some background on the capabilities of this beat maker/sampler. I like it's compact size and it offers what appears to be endless options. The buttons are very responsive and the digital display, even small, is very legible and you kind of learn and recognize the tools without even reading the manual. I so far only have used headphones for monitoring it. I want to implement my DJ turntables at some point.

Donner, Donner, Donner... what have you done this time... I've been playing electric bass and guitar for over three decades. This year my goal is to learn drums. I love writing, playing, and recording songs. The problem is that I live outside of town and there is no one to jam with. I have been using a "drum beat" guitar pedal, but that just loops the same beat... which gets boring after a while, as well as not adding any any fills or spice to the song. I have also tried creating beats using MIDI/samples and prerecorded drum loop samples. That is great if you want to create a drum line for a song that has a specific length. Yes, you can loop it, but again... boring after the twelfth time through. The Essential D1 lets me create a beat and have a few fills and variations on the beat that are accessible at the touch of a button (Donner... if you could please add a foot pedal for changing the beats and inserting a fill it would be appreciated immensely!). I can play along to a beat and between strums, push a fill or rhythm change button, and add some dynamics to my song writing process. So that is how I'm using the beat machine. It is easy to set up and write beats. I will say that as a visual person, it would be nice if you could connect via USB and create the beats on a grid then load them into a bank on the machine. The machine is small, lightweight, -portable- has great feeling touch pads, the knobs turn smoothly, and sliders... well, they slide well. Great machine with a lot of great features. It is easy to use, and the preloaded samples are decent. You can add your own samples and personalize the tones to your liking. This is a fun little machine packed with the power to keep you grooving, as Lionel Richie says, "All Night Long"... For me, it is a great way to add some dynamics to rhythms while I write and play songs. The only thing that could be better is if a foot pedal was added for inserting fills and swapping beats while playing guitar.

I got this to use on my stream with my friends. It works great, was easy to set up, the instructions were clear. And was up and running in no time.

This was ridiculously easy to get setup. I love that it can be a standalone or better yet incorporated into your setup. I’m still playing with it and finding endless functionality and having a blast. This is a very cool and robust piece that would improve any dj setup.
